1. In-wall copper pinhole: almost always in a beach-strip home 30+ years old. Chloride-rich coastal humidity has been pitting the copper from the outside for decades. The failure is usually on a hot water line (heat accelerates the corrosion), often near a bathroom wall, and is usually first noticed as a damp patch on a ceiling below or a swelling skirting board. Repair: isolate at meter, open the wall to expose, cut out failed section, splice in PEX or new copper, pressure test. Typical job 2-4 hours plus reinstatement.
2. Flexi hose burst: the most common single failure mode nationally. Braided stainless flexi hoses under vanities and kitchen sinks have a fatigue life around 7-10 years. The braid corrodes, then the inner liner ruptures, and the hose pumps out 1,000+ litres per hour until isolated. Repair: isolate, replace the hose (always replace both hot and cold pair, never just one), check every other flexi in the house at the same time. Job under an hour, the longer part is dealing with the water damage.
3. External copper or PVC burst from impact: outdoor taps clipped by a lawnmower, irrigation lines crushed by a car wheel, garden hose tap freezing in a rare cold snap. Repair varies, usually 1-3 hours.
