No, and it is not a grey area
Every gas appliance sold in Australia is certified for a specific use environment. Outdoor heaters, barbecues and camping stoves are certified on the assumption that they operate in open air, where the combustion products they release are diluted by an effectively unlimited supply of fresh air. Bring one indoors and that assumption collapses. The appliance has no flue, no room sealing, and none of the safety systems an indoor unit carries. There is no amount of care that makes it an indoor heater, and no cold snap that makes it worth the risk.
This is not a theoretical warning. Carbon monoxide deaths and hospitalisations linked to outdoor gas and heat bead appliances used indoors occur in Australia most winters, and Queensland's gas regulator repeats the warning every cold season for a reason.
Carbon monoxide is the reason
Gas burning in a room does two things: it consumes the oxygen in that room, and it releases combustion products into it. As oxygen drops, combustion gets less complete, and less complete combustion produces more carbon monoxide. It is a feedback loop that gets worse the longer the appliance runs. Carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless, and its early symptoms, headache, drowsiness and nausea, are exactly the symptoms that convince people to lie down in the room where the heater is running. That is the mechanism behind most of the tragedies, and it is why the answer to this question has no exceptions in it.
A closed garage, shed or tent counts as indoors
The question usually arrives in a softer form: what about the garage with the door down, the enclosed patio, the shed, the tent on a camping trip? All of them count as indoors. The test is not what the space is called, it is whether combustion products can build up faster than fresh air replaces them. A patio with two open sides and free air movement is an outdoor space. The same patio with blinds zipped down on a cold night is a room.

The safe ways to heat a Gold Coast home with gas
If you want real gas heating indoors, do it with an appliance certified for the job. A flued gas heater vents its combustion products outside and, serviced every two years at $150 to $200, is a safe and effective way to heat a living area. If you do not have a heater point, we install a new gas point, including a bayonet outlet for a portable flued unit, for $480 to $820 plus the compliance certificate as of 2026.
Honesty requires one more sentence: for many Gold Coast homes, a reverse cycle air conditioner is the cheapest heating to run, and our winters are short. If you already own one, using it costs you nothing new. Where gas heating earns its keep is the quality of the heat and homes that already have gas connected. If you have already run one indoors
If you have been using an outdoor appliance inside, stop, ventilate the space thoroughly and move the appliance out. If anyone in the house has headaches, dizziness, nausea or unusual tiredness that improves away from home, treat it as possible carbon monoxide exposure and seek medical advice. If someone is seriously unwell, call 000. None of this is about blame; the appliances are sold side by side with indoor ones and the packaging warnings are easy to miss. But once you know, the answer is fixed: outdoor appliances stay outdoors.
