Why is a walk-in shower often the dearer install?
Because a tiled walk-in shower is really a small civil engineering project. The floor must be screeded to fall so water finds the waste, the whole enclosure is membraned, the tiling covers floor and walls, and then the glass goes in, and quality glass is never cheap. Each of those steps is a licensed or skilled trade doing careful work in a small space. A bathtub, by contrast, is largely a set-and-connect exercise when it goes where the old one went: level it, connect the waste, seal the surrounds, tile the apron. The bath itself can be the cheapest major fixture in the room. Water supply points generally shift only modestly. Going the other way, shower to bath, is often simpler on the floor but adds the bath set and surrounds. Either direction, the conversion sits comfortably inside a normal renovation scope, and it is exactly the kind of change that costs least when it is decided before tiles are ordered rather than after.
