Weekend pricing gets treated as a dirty secret in this trade, which is silly, because the reason for it is boring and legitimate. What actually matters to you is knowing which jobs justify the premium and which ones are quietly happy to sit until a weekday. Here is how we talk it through with customers on the phone.
Weekend or weekday: what the decision looks like
| Situation | Can it wait until Monday? | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Burst pipe you cannot isolate at the meter | No | $360 to $560 first hour plus the work |
| Sewage backing up into the house | No | $360 to $560 first hour plus the work |
| Suspected gas leak | No, and call us on the way outside | $360 to $560 first hour plus the work |
| No hot water, tank not leaking | Usually yes | Weekday pricing, e.g. electric storage replacement $1,300 to $2,400 |
| Blocked drain, one fixture, still draining slowly | Usually yes | Machine drain clear $250 to $400 on a weekday |
| Dripping tap or running toilet | Yes | Tap repair $80 to $180 plus parts; toilet repair $120 to $300 |
Why do plumbers charge more on weekends?
Because the plumber standing in your driveway on a Sunday is giving up their weekend, and in most businesses is being paid penalty rates to do it. That is the whole story. A weekend callout also disrupts the coming week: parts suppliers are shut, so a Sunday job often means a temporary fix Sunday and a return visit Monday, which is two trips of cost baked into one job. We are an owner-operator business, so when you call Hills Plumbing & Gas on a Saturday you get Jieye, not a rostered subcontractor, and the after-hours rate reflects that it is genuinely his weekend on the line. What we will not do is inflate the job itself. The callout premium covers the first hour, and the work after that is quoted at the same fixed prices we would give you midweek.
How much more will I pay on a weekend?
Across the Gold Coast market the weekend premium generally lands between 1.5 and 2 times normal pricing, with public holidays at the top of that range. With us the structure is simpler: $360 to $560 for the first hour after hours or on weekends, then the work priced from the same fixed schedule as always. So a weekend burst pipe repair is the after-hours first hour plus our standard accessible burst repair price of $250 to $650 plus parts, not a mystery number invented on the day. Ask any plumber you call two questions before they dispatch: what is the callout component, and is the repair priced hourly or fixed after that. If they cannot answer both on the phone, keep calling around.
Which plumbing jobs can wait until Monday?
More than people think. A slow drain that is still draining, a dripping tap, a running toilet, a hot water system that has died but is not leaking, and a leaking toilet you can isolate at its stop tap are all Monday jobs, and we will say so on the phone rather than take the weekend money. The genuine weekend jobs are the ones causing active damage or risk: water you cannot shut off, sewage coming up through floor wastes, gas smells, and hot water tanks split and flooding. One tip that saves our customers real money: find your water meter now and check the isolation valve turns. If you can kill the water to the house, a burst flexi hose at 7pm Saturday becomes an inconvenience instead of an emergency, and you pay weekday prices on Monday.
How do I keep a weekend callout affordable?
Isolate what you can first, because a controlled problem is a cheaper problem. Describe the fault accurately on the phone so the right parts arrive in one trip. Accept a make-safe if it is offered: capping a burst line Sunday and doing the proper repair Monday is often the cheapest total path, and a good plumber will suggest it rather than stretch the weekend job out. And be honest with yourself about urgency. We would rather book you a fixed-price Monday slot than charge you weekend rates for a dripping tap, because you will remember which plumber told you the truth.
What should I do right now?
If water, sewage or gas is actively getting away from you, call us on 0472 657 042 whatever the day. If it is contained, take a photo, isolate the fixture, and call us Monday for weekday pricing. Either way you get a fixed price before work starts, from a QBCC licensed local (licence 15243081).
