The honest answer is that the hourly number is the wrong question
Hourly rates across Australia vary with the trade's licensing, the city, the day of the week and how the operator loads travel and vehicle costs into the figure. Two plumbers can quote the same hourly rate and land totals hundreds of dollars apart, because the rate tells you nothing about how many hours the job takes, whether travel is billed, whether the clock runs while parts are fetched, or what the materials margin is. That is why we do not publish an hourly rate and do not bill by one. The number you actually care about is what the finished job costs, so that is the number we quote, in writing, before work starts.
Hourly billing puts the incentive in the wrong place
Think about who carries the risk under each model. Under hourly billing, you carry it. If the job runs long, the fault is hard to find, or the apprentice is learning on your time, your bill grows and there is nothing you can do about it mid-job. Under fixed pricing, we carry it. If we misjudge how long a job takes, that is our problem, not yours, and the price we shook on stands. Fixed pricing also removes the quiet games hourly billing enables: the slow start, the long supplier run, the second visit that resets the clock. We would rather be fast and efficient on a fixed price than slow on your dime, and that alignment is the entire reason our model works.

Every figure in that table is a genuine installed guide range for the Gold Coast, not a teaser rate, and the exact fixed price you approve in writing before we start is the price you pay. Where a job falls outside these bands, or where conditions are hidden until access is made, we quote fixed on inspection and confirm before proceeding.
When time-based pricing is actually fair
We will be straight about the exception. Genuine investigation work, where nobody can know the scope until something is opened up, does not suit a blind fixed price. A concealed leak hunt or a fault that comes and goes needs diagnosis first. Our answer is to fix-price the diagnosis itself, for example leak detection at $200 to $500+ depending on the gear required, then quote the repair as a second fixed price once we can see the problem. You get certainty at both stages instead of an open-ended clock at either.
How to compare quotes when one plumber is hourly and one is fixed
Get the hourly quoter to commit to a total. Ask them to estimate hours, state the rate, state the call-out fee, state the materials markup, and put a cap on the total in writing. If they will not cap it, you are not comparing two quotes, you are comparing a promise with a hope. Then put the capped figure against a fixed quote for the identical scope. In our experience, when both numbers are forced into the open, fixed pricing wins on the common jobs and ties on the rest, which is why the industry drift on the Gold Coast is steadily toward fixed.
Why fixed pricing works especially well with an owner-operator
There is a structural reason we can publish our prices and larger outfits often cannot. As an owner-operated business, the person quoting your job on the Gold Coast is the person doing it, so there is no gap between what was promised on the phone and what happens on site, and no commission structure rewarding whoever upsells the biggest invoice. Fixed pricing keeps us honest in the other direction too: because we cannot bill extra hours, we carry the right parts, we diagnose properly the first time, and we have no reason to stretch a forty-minute job into an afternoon. The 5.0-star review record is largely built on that one alignment, the price quoted being the price paid.
