A gas point is the fitting that lets an appliance connect to your gas supply: a fixed connection for a cooktop, a bayonet socket for a heater or BBQ that can be unplugged, or an outdoor point for an outdoor kitchen. The price is not about the appliance. It is about the pipe. Here is how we price it and where the money goes.
What decides where you land between $350 and $900?
Two things: how much new line has to be run, and how hard it is to get it there. A point a couple of metres from the meter or the existing line, with easy access through a roof space or under a raised timber floor, is the cheap end. A point at the opposite end of a slab home, where the line has to go up through the roof, across, and down an external wall, is the dear end. Between those, the things that push the price up are a two-storey home, brick walls that need drilling, a line that has to be run outside and clipped neatly along the house, and an existing supply that is already feeding several appliances and has to be checked for capacity before we add another. Every point also gets an isolation valve, a pressure test on the whole installation, and the compliance certificate, which is included in the gas work and never a separate charge.
Gas point for a cooktop
This is the most common request on the Gold Coast and it usually comes up in two situations: a kitchen renovation that moves the cooktop, or a home that has gas hot water outside but nothing in the kitchen. The point goes inside the cabinet under the cooktop with an isolation valve so the appliance can be disconnected without shutting off the house. If you are renovating, get us in before the cabinets are fixed and the benchtop is templated, because running a line into an open frame is a fraction of the work of running it through finished joinery. The appliance connection is quoted with the job, so you get one fixed figure with the point shown as its own line.
Bayonet for a gas heater
A bayonet is a socket fitted low on a wall, usually in the living room, that a portable or wall-mounted gas heater plugs into with a hose. The install is the same pipe job as a cooktop point, with one extra step: we check the room is suitable for the heater you plan to use. Unflued heaters need enough room volume and fixed ventilation to be safe, and they are not permitted in bedrooms or bathrooms. If the room does not meet the requirement, we will tell you before we run the line rather than after. Winters on the Gold Coast are short, so be honest with yourself about how often the heater will run before you spend the money. A bayonet for a heater you use six weeks a year is still worth it to some households and not to others.
Outdoor BBQ or outdoor kitchen point
The outdoor point is the one that most often lands at the top of the range, simply because the alfresco area tends to be a long way from the meter or the LPG bottles. What you get for it is a BBQ or outdoor kitchen that never runs out of gas halfway through a cook and never needs a bottle swap. Two things to check before you book. First, the appliance has to be suitable for the gas type at your house. A BBQ set up for bottled LPG needs a conversion kit and a different regulator to run on natural gas, and not every unit can be converted. Second, the point has to be positioned where the appliance will actually sit, so if the outdoor kitchen is still on paper, send us the plan. If you use the BBQ a handful of times a year, a bottle is a perfectly good answer and we will say so.
What is included and what is not
- Included: the new line from the nearest suitable point on your supply, the fitting or bayonet socket, an isolation valve, clipping and protection of the pipe, a pressure test on the installation, and the compliance certificate.
- Not included in the point figure: the appliance, the appliance connection, which is quoted with the job, any electrical work such as a power point for ignition, and any building work such as patching a wall or lifting decking to get at the route.
What if my house has no gas at all?
Then a point is not the first job. If there is natural gas in your street, a new connection has to be arranged with the network before we can run anything inside the property. If there is no mains gas, the option is an LPG bottle set with a regulator and a line to the house. Either way it is a bigger job than a single point and we quote it on inspection, after checking what is available at your address, rather than guessing. We will also tell you plainly if bringing gas in for one BBQ is not worth it.
Who can run a gas point in Queensland?
Only a licensed gas fitter. Gas work is licensed separately from plumbing in Queensland, so ask for the gas work licence specifically, and expect a compliance certificate when the job is done. A gas point run by an unlicensed person is illegal, uninsurable and genuinely dangerous, and if we are ever asked to connect an appliance to one we cannot verify, we have to treat it as unverified work and inspect it first.
How to get a fixed price
Tell us what the point is for, where the meter or bottles are, where the appliance will sit, and whether the house is on a slab or a raised floor. A couple of photos help. On most jobs we can confirm the price from that. Where the route is genuinely unclear, we look first and confirm the figure before we start. No hourly rates, no variations on the day.
