The first five minutes: stop the water, protect the people
Every litre that goes down any drain in the house is now coming back up at the lowest fixture, which is usually the shower or a floor waste. So stop the dishwasher and washing machine mid-cycle if you have to, and tell everyone to stop flushing. Keep kids and pets out of affected rooms. Do not try to plunge a toilet that is backing up from the main line, because you are pushing against the whole drainage system and you will only redirect sewage to another fixture. If sewage has already surfaced, leave it where it is until the line is cleared. Cleaning up before the blockage is fixed just means cleaning up twice.
Find your overflow relief gully, because it may be doing its job
Queensland homes are required to have an overflow relief gully, a grated drain fitting outside, set lower than your indoor fixtures. Its whole purpose is to give a blocked or surcharged sewer somewhere to overflow outside the house instead of inside it. Walk the perimeter and find it. If it is discharging water or sewage, that is unpleasant but it means the system is protecting your indoor floors, and it confirms the blockage is in the main line, not a single fixture. If your gully is buried under a garden bed, paved over, or has pot plants sitting on the grate, it cannot relieve anything. We see exactly that on a large share of the backup jobs we attend, and it is the difference between a mess in the garden and a mess in the hallway.
Work out whose problem it is before you panic about cost
In Queensland the property owner is responsible for the house drain up to the connection point with the council sewer, and the council is responsible for the main beyond it. A quick indicator: if your neighbours have sewage problems at the same time, or sewage is surfacing from a council manhole in the street, ring the City of Gold Coast first because it may be their main. If it is only your place, it is almost certainly your drain. When we attend and find the blockage is on the council side, we tell you and you call it in rather than pay us to chase it.
What clearing a sewage backup costs on the Gold Coast
| Job | Typical Gold Coast cost as of 2026 |
|---|---|
| Machine clearing of the blocked sewer, business hours | $250 to $400 |
| After-hours emergency attendance | $360 to $560 for the first hour, plus the clearing work |
| CCTV inspection to find the cause | $200 to $350, or $120 to $180 as an add-on to the clear |
| CCTV plus jetting plus condition report | $500 to $900 |
| Spot repair of a broken section found on camera | $800 to $1,800 |
| Relining a root-damaged line | $400 to $600 or more per metre installed |
If it is 9pm and the gully is relieving outside while the inside fixtures are holding, it can sometimes wait until morning at business-hours rates. If sewage is inside the house, do not wait. We answer the phone either way and tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Treat everything sewage touched as contaminated
Raw sewage carries bacteria and viruses, so cleanup matters as much as clearing. Once the drain is flowing, hard surfaces need washing with detergent and then disinfecting, soft furnishings and carpet that soaked up sewage generally need professional cleaning or disposal, and anyone doing the cleanup should wear gloves and wash thoroughly afterwards. Queensland Health publishes practical guidance on cleaning up after sewage overflows and it is worth following properly. If the volume is significant or wastewater got into wall cavities, talk to your insurer before you strip anything out, because sudden escape of liquid is commonly covered.
Stop it happening again
A backup is nearly always the loud final symptom of a quiet long-term problem, most often tree roots in older earthenware pipe. Once the emergency is cleared, put a camera down the line. If the footage shows roots at the joints, clearing alone buys you months, not years. Relining or a spot repair fixes the entry points for good, and we can show you the exact frames of footage that justify the recommendation, or the footage that shows you do not need it.
