How long should a hot water system last?
A storage tank hot water system should give you 10 to 12 years, and continuous flow gas units commonly run 15 to 20 years because there is no tank to corrode. That is the national picture. The honest local caveat is that Gold Coast systems, especially anything within a few kilometres of the coast, often come in at the lower end because salt air attacks external casings, valves and fittings. The single biggest thing that extends tank life is replacing the sacrificial anode every 3 to 5 years, which most homeowners have never heard of until the tank fails. If your system is past 10 years and has never had an anode change, treat any fault as the beginning of the end and plan accordingly rather than reacting at 6am on a cold morning.
When is repairing a hot water system worth it?
Repair is worth it when the system is young, the fault is a consumable part, and the tank itself is sound. Thermocouples, thermostats, PTR valves, tempering valves and elements are all wear parts. On a five year old tank, replacing one is money well spent and the system should run on for years. Two situations flip the answer. First, a leaking tank: once the cylinder wall has corroded through, no repair exists, and anyone offering one is selling you a delay. Second, repeat faults on an old system. If we are back for the second fault in eighteen months on a 12 year old tank, we will tell you straight that a third callout is likely and the repair money would be better going toward replacement. We would rather lose a small job than have you resent us when the tank lets go six months later.
What does replacement cost compared to repair?
Small repairs are quoted on inspection because the part and access vary so much, and we give you the fixed price before we start. Replacement pricing is published and fixed: electric storage $1,300 to $2,400 installed, gas storage $1,800 to $3,200, gas continuous flow $1,900 to $3,500, and heat pumps $2,500 to $4,500 after rebates, with rebates typically worth $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the current schemes, confirmed at quote time. The useful comparison is repair cost against remaining life. Spending a few hundred dollars on a tank with five likely years left is fine. Spending it on a tank with one likely year left means you pay twice within eighteen months, and often the second time is at emergency pace with less choice about the system you end up with.
Should I replace like-for-like or change system type?
A failure is the natural moment to reconsider, because you are paying for installation either way. Like-for-like is fastest and cheapest, and if your electric or gas storage system served the household well, it is a perfectly sound choice. But if your bills have been high, your household has grown or shrunk, or you have solar panels on the roof, it is worth pricing a heat pump or continuous flow alternative alongside the straight swap. In Queensland, any replacement must meet current requirements even if the old install did not, including tempering valve requirements under AS/NZS 3500.4 and, for new-for-old energy efficiency, the relevant Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 provisions.
