Should I replace my solar hot water system with a heat pump?

If your solar hot water system has failed on the Gold Coast, a heat pump at $2,500 to $4,500 after rebates is usually the simpler replacement: no roof work, no collectors, easier servicing. As of 2026, though, a healthy solar system can still edge a heat pump on running cost in Queensland, so a repairable solar system is worth repairing.

This question almost always arrives after a failure: leaking collectors, a dead booster, a cracked roof tank. The answer depends on whether the solar system is repairable at sensible cost, and on what you value between running cost, reliability and simplicity. Is a heat pump better than solar hot water?

Not automatically, and this is the part of the answer many sales pages skip. A properly working solar thermal system in Queensland harvests free heat most days of the year and can still beat a heat pump on pure running cost, because our solar resource is excellent. Where the heat pump wins is everywhere else: it costs less to install than a new solar thermal system, it attracts rebates, it involves no roof work, it has one serviceable unit at ground level instead of collectors, roof penetrations and a booster, and if you have or plan rooftop PV, running it on your own daytime electricity gets you most of the way to solar-thermal running costs anyway. Our honest framing: solar wins the running-cost column, heat pumps win the simplicity, reliability and upfront-cost columns, and for a failed system the second set usually matters more.

When is repairing the solar system the right call?

Repair makes sense when the system is under about 10 years old and the failure is a single component: a booster element, a controller, a valve, a pump on a split system. Those are routine fixes we quote on inspection. Repair stops making sense when the collectors themselves are leaking or hail-damaged, the roof tank is corroding, or you are facing the second significant fault in a couple of years, because at that point you are drip-feeding money into a system nearing the end of its life. One more practical trigger we see often: if you are reroofing, or installing PV and the collectors are occupying the best north-facing roof space, that is a natural moment to retire solar thermal and free the roof for photovoltaics, which are more flexible in what they can power.

What does switching to a heat pump involve and cost?

The swap is usually a one day job. We decommission the solar system, remove or make safe the roof components, and install the heat pump on a slab or pad at ground level, typically where an old tank or the booster tank stood. Installed price is $2,500 to $4,500 after rebates. Rebates, mainly small-scale technology certificates plus any current Queensland scheme, are typically worth $1,000 to $2,500 combined, and we confirm the exact current figures at quote time because schemes open, close and change funding through the year. The install must comply with the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018, tempering requirements under AS/NZS 3500.4, and comes with a compliance certificate. Two siting notes we always raise: heat pumps make a low fan noise, so we position them away from bedroom windows and boundary walls, and they need airflow around the unit, not a sealed cupboard.

Will a heat pump cope with Gold Coast conditions?

Yes, and better than almost anywhere in the country. Heat pumps extract heat from the surrounding air, so their efficiency drops in genuinely cold climates. The Gold Coast's mild winters are close to ideal operating territory, and the units we fit are specified for coastal installs. The pattern from our own service work is that the coastal enemy is salt corrosion on outdoor cabinets and fittings rather than temperature, so unit siting and an occasional rinse of the casing matter more here than cold-weather performance. Expect a well-installed heat pump to run 10 to 15 years with basic servicing. As with any hot water work in Queensland, installation and the associated valve and tempering work is licensed plumbing work, so check your installer holds a QBCC licence, as we do.

What should I do with a failed solar system today?

Get the fault diagnosed before you commit either way. If it is a cheap component on a young system, repair it and enjoy the lowest running costs available.
