Do these five things in the first five minutes
First, shut off the water at the meter, usually at the front boundary, quarter turn or lever across the pipe. If the dripping slows or stops within a few minutes, you have confirmed it is a pressurised plumbing leak. Second, stay away from light fittings and switch off the lighting circuit at the switchboard if water is anywhere near a fitting, because water and live wiring in a ceiling is the real danger in this situation. Third, if the plasterboard is bulging, put a bucket underneath and pierce one small hole at the lowest point with a screwdriver. Controlled draining through one hole beats a collapsed sheet of soaked plasterboard. Fourth, move furniture and electronics out from under the wet zone and get towels down. Fifth, call us. Ceiling leaks do not improve overnight.

The usual suspects above a Gold Coast ceiling
If the leak appeared in dry weather, it is almost always plumbing. The most common single cause we find is a burst flexible hose under an upstairs vanity or toilet, a braided part that costs $20 to $40 a hose at trade and fails without warning as it ages. Next is a failed shower, where waterproofing or sealant has let go and every shower sends a little more water into the floor below until the ceiling stains. Then come leaking pipe joints, overflowing air-conditioning condensate trays, and hot water lines. If the leak only appears during or straight after rain, think roof, flashings or blocked gutters instead, which is roofing territory, though we will tell you honestly which trade you need rather than bill you to discover it.
What the fix typically costs
Emergency attendance after hours runs $360 to $560 for the first hour plus the work required, and we give you that figure on the phone before we leave. In business hours there is no call-out fee and we quote fixed on arrival. An accessible burst pipe or flexi repair runs $250 to $650 plus parts once the source is exposed. If the source is not obvious, leak detection runs $200 to $500+ using acoustic and thermal gear before we cut anything, which usually means one small access hole instead of an exploratory demolition. Shower and waterproofing failures are quoted fixed on inspection because the scope depends on what the tiles are hiding.
Handle the insurance side while it is fresh
Sudden water escape is a standard home insurance event, and the resulting damage to ceilings, walls and contents is commonly claimable, while the worn part that failed is typically not. Photograph everything before cleanup: the ceiling, the water, the failed component once found. Keep the failed part, keep our invoice, and note times. Insurers respond well to a licensed plumber's invoice stating the cause, and we write ours with that in mind. If drying equipment or make-safe electrical checks are needed, your insurer's assessor will usually coordinate them, but stopping the leak fast is what keeps the claim small.
Stop the next one before it happens
Almost every dry-weather ceiling leak we attend was preventable. Flexi hoses should be inspected and replaced roughly every 5 to 10 years, and every wet area should have its isolation valves working so a future failure can be stopped at the vanity instead of at the meter. While we are on site for the repair we check the remaining flexis, the isolation valves and the visible pipework above the ceiling, and we will tell you plainly if anything else is on borrowed time.
