Unscrewing the old appliance and leaving the line is not disconnection, it is a leak waiting for a valve to fail.

Why can't I just turn the valve off and unscrew the appliance?
Because a closed appliance valve is a temporary control, not a termination. Valves weep, get knocked, and get turned by the curious, and a line that dead-ends at a closed valve behind a new induction cooktop is a leak path sitting inside your cabinetry for the next decade. A compliant cap-off is different in kind: the line is isolated, purged of gas so no flammable volume sits in the pipe, permanently sealed with a threaded cap or plug rated for the job, and then leak tested to confirm the whole remaining installation holds pressure. That test matters more than the cap, because disturbing one part of an old gas installation can reveal weaknesses elsewhere. All of it is gas fitting work under Queensland law, licensed without exception, and it is the part of an electrification project that cannot be DIYed no matter how handy you are.
What is the difference between capping a line and abolishing the connection?
Capping is house-side work on your installation: an appliance or branch line is sealed while the rest of the gas system, and your meter, stay live. That suits homes removing one appliance while keeping, say, gas hot water. Abolishment is ending the property's gas supply entirely: the house-side installation is made safe by a licensed gas fitter, and the meter removal and account closure run through your gas retailer and the network distributor, which is an administrative process with its own fees and timeframes set by them, not by us. The order matters. Appliances first, then lines made safe, then the retailer process, and if you cap everything but forget to close the account, you will keep paying the daily supply charge for a connection you no longer use, which is the most common own-goal we see in DIY-managed conversions.
What does gas disconnection cost on the Gold Coast?

Does capping a gas line need a compliance certificate?

Keep that paperwork with your house records.
