Is it illegal to install my own gas cooktop in Queensland?
Yes. Connecting, disconnecting or altering any gas appliance or gas pipework in Queensland is gas work, and gas work may only be performed by the holder of a gas work licence. The licensing regime sits under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004, administered by Resources Safety and Health Queensland, and it applies to natural gas and LPG alike. This is not the same as electrical appliance rules, and it is stricter than many home renovators expect: even swapping one cooktop for an identical model, or refitting the bayonet on an LPG connection, is licensed work. Penalties for unlicensed gas work are substantial, and they are the least of the risks. An unlicensed connection that leaks puts a flammable gas under your benchtop.
What licence does the installer actually need?
The installer needs a Queensland gas work licence covering the type of work and gas involved, which is separate from a plumbing licence. A QBCC plumbing licence covers water and drainage; it does not by itself authorise gas work. Many tradespeople, ourselves included, hold both, but when you book a cooktop install the question to ask is specifically about the gas work licence. You can ask to see it, and a professional will not be offended. What paperwork should I receive after the install?
You should receive a gas compliance certificate, and the job is not finished until you do. After installing a cooktop, the gas fitter must test the installation, verify correct operating pressure and appliance performance, and certify the work. That certificate is your evidence for insurers, for a future sale, and for any warranty claim on the appliance, because manufacturers routinely require licensed installation for the warranty to stand. A like-for-like swap assumes the existing gas line, isolation valve and position suit the new appliance. What does a licensed installer actually do differently?
The visible difference is the leak test and commissioning; the invisible difference is everything designed into the installation. A licensed gas fitter verifies the gas supply and pipe sizing can deliver the appliance's rated load, fits proper isolation, uses the correct connection method for the appliance and gas type, checks clearances to rangehoods and combustible surfaces against AS/NZS 5601 and the manufacturer's instructions, converts injectors where a unit is being run on LPG rather than natural gas, then pressure tests the system and proves the appliance at correct working pressure.
