blocked drains

Why do my drains gurgle?

A gurgling drain means air is being pulled or pushed through the water traps, usually by a partial blockage or a blocked vent. As of 2026 a machine drain clear on the Gold Coast costs $250 to $400, and in our experience most gurgling drains we investigate turn out to be early stage sewer blockages rather than harmless noise.

Gurgling is air moving where water should be

Every fixture in your house, sinks, showers, floor wastes and the toilet, has a water trap that seals sewer air out of your home. When the drainage system is healthy, water flows away smoothly and the vent pipe lets air in behind it, so the traps stay full and silent. When something restricts the pipe or blocks the vent, draining water has to drag air through the nearest trap instead. That bubbling pull of air through trap water is the gurgle you hear. It is the plumbing equivalent of a straw hitting the bottom of the glass, and it is telling you the system is fighting for air.

The two minute test: one fixture or every fixture

Before you call anyone, work out the pattern, because it points to the cause.

If one fixture gurgles, say the kitchen sink and nothing else, the problem is local to that fixture's branch line. A partial clog of grease or food waste is the usual culprit, and it is the cheapest fix on the list.

If multiple fixtures gurgle, or the toilet gurgles when the shower or washing machine drains, the restriction is in the main sewer line that everything shares. That is the pattern to take seriously, because the main line is where tree roots and collapses live, and a partial main blockage eventually becomes a complete one, often at the worst possible time.

If a drain keeps re-blocking after clearing, the cause is structural, usually roots at a pipe joint, and the camera footage tells us whether relining or a repair is the permanent answer. That is a separate decision with its own pricing, and we only recommend it off real footage, not guesswork.

Why acting early is genuinely cheaper

A gurgle is the discount version of the problem. A partial blockage cleared this week is a $250 to $400 standard hours job. The same blockage left until it seals the pipe completely tends to announce itself with sewage at the overflow relief gully or backing up into the shower, often after hours, when emergency rates of $360 to $560 for the first hour plus the work apply. We are not saying that to scare you into a booking; it is simply the maths we watch play out on Gold Coast jobs every month. Gurgling is the system giving you notice.

What you can try first

For a single gurgling sink, a plunger is a fair first move, and clearing the trap under the sink is legal DIY territory. Check your overflow relief gully outside too: if water or paper is sitting in it, skip the DIY and call, because the main is already backing up. What we would steer you away from is chemical drain cleaners, which rarely fix the actual restriction and make the pipe unpleasant for whoever works on it next. If the gurgle involves the toilet or more than one fixture, drain work on the main is licensed drainage work in Queensland, and that is where we come in.

One more pattern worth knowing: gurgling that starts or worsens during heavy rain points at a rain affected sewer, either surcharge in the street main or stormwater getting into cracked pipes on your side. That version has its own page on this site, and its own fix, so mention the rain link when you call because it changes what we look for first.
