Is cloudy white water safe?
Almost always yes. Pour a glass and watch it. If the cloudiness clears from the bottom upward within a minute or so, it is millions of tiny air bubbles coming out of solution, common after mains work, after the water has been off, or in cooler weather when water holds more dissolved air. It is harmless. If the water stays cloudy, or clears from the top down leaving sediment at the bottom, that is particles rather than air, and it is worth investigating. Milky water paired with banging pipes after council works usually settles on its own within a day once the air purges through the taps.
Why is my water brown from every tap?
Brown or yellow water at both hot and cold taps generally means disturbed sediment, and the first question is whether it is the network or your pipes. Mains flushing, a burst water main nearby, firefighting draw-off or works in your street will stir rust and manganese sediment through the mains, discolouring whole streets at once. That usually clears after running the front garden tap, the one closest to the meter, for a few minutes. If neighbours have the same problem, it is the network, and you can report it. If it is only your house, and especially if your home predates 1980, suspect your own galvanised steel pipes shedding rust internally. Persistent brown water from an older home's cold taps is one of the standard signs that original steel pipework is reaching the end of its life.
Why is only my hot water brown or rusty?
This is the one with a clock on it. When discolouration comes from hot taps only, the cold system is clean and the common factor is the hot water storage tank. Steel tanks are protected internally by a glass lining and a sacrificial anode. Once the anode is consumed, the tank wall itself corrodes, and rusty hot water is the corrosion arriving at your shower. Tanks typically give 8 to 12 years, and rusty hot water in that age bracket usually means the tank is on its way out. Replacing the anode can extend a younger tank's life, but once water runs brown from a tank past ten years old, we quote replacement, because a rusting tank's next act is leaking from the bottom, usually at the least convenient time.

Is discoloured water safe to drink or wash in?
Use judgement rather than panic. Air-clouded water is completely safe. Water discoloured by rust sediment is generally not considered a health hazard at the levels that discolour a glass, but it tastes metallic, stains laundry badly, and nobody should be drinking visibly brown water as a habit. Run the cold kitchen tap clear before filling the kettle, hold off on washing whites until it settles, and if discolouration persists beyond a day, treat it as a plumbing symptom rather than a water quality quirk. The one situation we treat differently is discolouration accompanied by unusual taste or smell that does not clear with flushing, which is worth reporting to the network operator the same day. And rusty hot water is a mechanical warning, not a health one: the tank is telling you about its own walls, not about the water supply.
