How do I tell where the toilet leak is coming from?
Dry everything thoroughly with a towel, then watch. If the base stays dry until someone flushes and then water creeps out, the seal between the pan outlet and the drain has failed, and every flush is sending a portion of waste water under the pan instead of down the pipe. If dampness returns without any flushing, the water is clean supply water from above: the cistern inlet valve, the flexible connector, or the seal between cistern and pan, running down the back of the pan and pooling at the base where it looks like a base leak. A few sheets of dry toilet paper laid around the base and behind the pan make a good tell-tale overnight. Food colouring in the cistern is the other classic test: coloured water at the base without flushing means the cistern side is leaking.
Is a toilet leaking at the base an emergency?
Waste water leaks are urgent even when the volume looks trivial. The water you see at the base is the overflow; the rest is soaking into the floor beneath the pan, and bathroom subfloors do not announce damage until tiles drum, grout lines darken or, in timber-floored Queenslanders, the floor softens. We attend jobs where a slow seal leak has run for months and the pan is effectively sitting on rotten substrate, turning a $120 to $300 reseal into a floor repair plus retile. Waste water under a floor is also a hygiene issue in a way a clean-water leak is not. So: leak only on flush means minimise use and book promptly. Constant clean-water weep means turn the mini stop tap beside the toilet clockwise to isolate it, and the urgency drops to convenience.

Can I just silicone around the base of the toilet?
Please do not, and if a previous occupant already has, that neat bead of silicone is worth mentioning when you call. Silicone around the base does not fix the seal; it dams the escaping water so it can only go down, into the floor, while the visible symptom disappears. Some installers run a partial bead for stability, always leaving a gap at the back so a leak can show itself. A full sealed ring around a leaking pan is the single best way to convert a small repair into structural floor work.
