Hot Water Repairs in Worongary

On a rural block, the hot water unit is the end of a chain, and the fault is often somewhere earlier in that chain. Working from the unit backwards is how you end up replacing something that was never broken.

The gas supply side. LPG bottle systems have failure modes mains gas simply does not have. A bottle that has run down with nobody watching the gauge. An auto-changeover regulator that has stopped changing over, so the household empties one bottle and never draws on the full one sitting beside it. Regulators have a service life and when they start drifting you get low pressure at the appliance, which reads as a unit that lights and then drops out, or a continuous flow heater that cannot hold temperature at high flow. There is also the cold-morning behaviour of bottles under heavy draw, where the liquid cannot vaporise fast enough to keep up with a continuous flow unit running full noise. The quickest check anybody can do is whether the cooktop is behaving normally. If the cooktop is also struggling, the problem is the gas supply and not the water heater.

The water supply side. Everything on a tank and pump property depends on the pump doing its job. A pressure pump that is cycling rapidly, a waterlogged pressure vessel, a failing pressure switch or a clogged inlet filter all drop the flow and pressure arriving at the heater. Continuous flow units in particular need a minimum flow rate to fire at all, so a struggling pump produces a heater that will not light, lights intermittently, or delivers water that swings hot and cold in the shower. Nobody blames the pump because the symptom is at the shower. Sediment from the tank, a partly blocked inlet strainer or a filter cartridge nobody has changed in three years will do the same thing. On a rural call these get checked before anything comes off the heater.

What is actually inside the unit. Once supply is ruled out, the faults are the familiar ones, elements and thermostats on electric storage, relief and tempering valves, ignition and thermocouple faults on LPG units, and fault codes on the heat pumps and solar systems that are more common out here than in town. Solar adds its own list, a booster switched off at the board, a failed booster element, valves at the panels and roof-side leaks. Heat pumps do well on acreage because there is airflow and space, but sealed refrigeration faults go to the manufacturer's agent rather than us, and we say so upfront.

One visit, not three. Tell us the system type, the brand, whether the cooktop still works and whether the pump sounds normal, and we arrive with a much better chance of finishing it that day. Where a part has to be ordered we will say so immediately rather than let you discover it on the second trip. Anything on the LPG side is licensed gas work and leaves a gas compliance certificate, no exceptions.

Repairs are quoted on diagnosis. On a rural property the diagnosis has to cover the whole chain, gas supply or pump and tank water first, then the unit, because fixing the heater when the fault is upstream just wastes a trip for both of us.
