That last point is the one worth sitting with. The chemical did not fail because the customer used it wrong. It failed because supermarket drain cleaners are built for soft organic gunk near the fixture, and most stubborn blockages are not that. Here is the honest breakdown.

Do chemical drain cleaners actually damage pipes?
They can, and the damage pattern depends on what your pipes are made of. Caustic soda works by reacting with fats and generating heat, and that heat is the problem: repeated doses can soften and distort the glued joints in older PVC waste pipe, and the caustic sits in the trap doing its work on your pipe long after the blockage has laughed it off. On pre-1980s homes around the Gold Coast with galvanised steel or copper waste sections, acid cleaners actively corrode the pipe wall. And on old earthenware sewer lines, the chemical does nothing at all to the tree roots or collapsed joint that caused the blockage, so the only thing it dissolves is your patience. The other damage is to people. Caustic burns are nasty, splash-back from a blocked drain full of chemical is common, and mixing a caustic product with a bleach or acid product in the same trap creates genuinely dangerous reactions. If you have already dosed a drain and it is still blocked, tell whoever attends, because we need to know what is sitting in that water before we plunge or machine it.
Why do drain cleaners mask the real blockage?
Because they partially work. A bottle of caustic soda will often burn a small channel through a grease or hair blockage, flow returns for a week or two, and the underlying obstruction stays put and rebuilds. We see this cycle constantly: three bottles over two months, then the call to us anyway, and the CCTV camera shows roots at a joint or a bellied section of pipe that no chemical on earth was ever going to fix. The pattern that matters is recurrence. A drain that blocks once may just have had something dropped down it. A drain that keeps slowing after chemical treatment has a physical cause, and the money spent on bottles would have covered a decent part of a proper clear.
What should I use instead of chemicals?
Start mechanical, not chemical. A plunger with a proper seal fixes a large share of single-fixture blockages, and it is legal, safe and free. For kitchen sinks, pull the trap apart under the sink with a bucket underneath, because most kitchen blockages live right there. Boiling water and detergent is fine for light grease maintenance. When is a blocked drain more than a DIY problem?
Three signs. First, multiple fixtures backing up at once, which points to the main sewer line, not the fixture. Second, gurgling from other drains when one is used. Third, any blockage that returns within weeks of being cleared. All three mean the problem is downstream in pipework you cannot reach, and in Queensland, work on sanitary drainage is licensed work anyway. Pouring stronger and stronger chemicals at a sewer problem just delays the fix and makes the eventual job less pleasant for everyone.
What should I do right now?
Plunge first, dismantle the trap if it is a sink, and skip the second bottle of chemical. If the drain is still slow or other fixtures are joining in, it needs machine equipment.
