What is a gas compliance certificate and who issues it?
A gas compliance certificate is the document a licensed gas fitter issues to certify that gas installation work meets Queensland's gas safety laws and AS/NZS 5601. Gas work in Queensland sits under the Petroleum and Gas (Safety) Regulation, overseen by Resources Safety and Health Queensland rather than the usual building bodies, which is one reason the paperwork trips people up. The gas fitter who does the work tests the installation, certifies it, and gives you the certificate. Only a licensed gas fitter can issue one, and only for work they did. Keep every certificate with your house documents, because they are your proof the installation was legal and tested.
Which gas jobs need certification in Queensland?
Effectively all of them: any installation, alteration, removal or repair of a gas system needs a licensed gas fitter and certification. That includes the jobs people assume are too small to count. Swapping an old cooktop for a new one, even like-for-like at $260 to $480 plus compliance, involves disconnecting and reconnecting an appliance to the gas system, which is licensed work. Running a new gas point for a barbecue or heater at $480 to $820 plus compliance certainly is. Gas hot water installations, bayonet fittings, regulators, cylinder changeovers on LPG installations, and any pipework repair all sit in the same category. Natural gas and LPG are treated the same way, and that extends to caravans and boats.
Why can't I connect my own gas appliance?
Because gas errors are lethal in ways plumbing errors are not, Queensland law leaves no DIY category for gas work at all. A water leak ruins a floor. A gas leak can level a room, and an appliance burning badly in a poorly ventilated space produces carbon monoxide, which kills quietly. Certification is not just paperwork: it means the installation was pressure tested for leaks, the appliance was checked for correct operation and ventilation, and clearances around it meet AS/NZS 5601. How do I check my gas fitter is licensed?
Ask for their gas work licence and verify it before any work starts; a legitimate gas fitter will not hesitate. Gas work licensing in Queensland is administered separately from standard plumbing licensing, and plenty of plumbers are not gas fitters.
