What plumbing jobs are actually legal to DIY in Queensland?
The legal DIY list is short: tap washers and jumper valves, showerheads, and toilet seats. These sit in the unregulated work category under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 and its regulation, because they do not disturb the sealed water supply or drainage system in any meaningful way. Basic maintenance like cleaning gutters and surface grates is fine too. That is genuinely about where the list ends. Queensland's rules are stricter than a lot of people assume, and the safest habit is simple: if the job involves cutting into, connecting to or altering water supply, drainage or gas, it is licensed work. When in doubt, check the QBCC's guidance before you pick up a spanner.
Can I replace a flexi hose or a tap myself?
No. Replacing a flexible hose or a tap set is regulated plumbing work in Queensland, even though both look like simple screw-on jobs. This surprises almost everyone. The reason is risk: a flexi hose connects directly to mains pressure, and a poorly seated washer or over-tightened braid fails catastrophically. Burst flexi hoses are one of the most common causes of internal flooding we attend, and insurers know it. The same goes for swapping a mixer tap or installing a new laundry tap. The parts are cheap at the hardware store, but the legal right to connect them to the water supply belongs to licensed plumbers.
What happens if I do illegal plumbing work myself?
You risk fines for unlicensed work, an insurance claim knocked back, and problems when you sell. The QBCC can take action over unlicensed plumbing work, and the penalties are a lot more than a plumber's invoice would have been. The bigger financial risk is usually insurance. If a DIY connection floods your home, your insurer can decline the water damage claim once their assessor identifies unlicensed work as the cause, and those claims routinely run into tens of thousands. Then at sale time, building and pest inspectors flag suspect plumbing, and unapproved work becomes a negotiating chip against you. Fixing it later through retrospective certification costs $400 to $1,500 for the certification alone, plus any corrective work.
Why is Queensland so strict about plumbing work?
Because plumbing failures are invisible until they are expensive or dangerous, so Queensland regulates the work, not just the outcome. A bad electrical joint fails obviously. A bad plumbing joint drips inside a wall for two years, rots the frame and grows mould before anyone notices. Cross-connections can contaminate drinking water, unvented drainage lets sewer gas into homes, and untempered hot water scalds children. The licensing system under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 and the standards in AS/NZS 3500 exist because the cost of getting it wrong lands years later, often on somebody who had nothing to do with the original shortcut.
What about DIY gas work?
There is no DIY gas work in Queensland at all. Every gas installation job, down to disconnecting and reconnecting a gas cooktop, must be done by a licensed gas fitter under the Petroleum and Gas (Safety) Regulation, with work certified on completion. This applies to natural gas and LPG alike, including caravans and boats. Gas mistakes do not flood a laundry, they burn houses down and poison occupants with carbon monoxide, which is why the law leaves zero room here. If a gas appliance needs moving, swapping or servicing beyond cleaning the outside, it is a licensed gas fitter's job every time.
What is the smart way to handle small plumbing jobs?
Do the legal three yourself if you are handy, and batch everything else into one plumber visit. Washers, showerheads and toilet seats are honest DIY territory and we would never tell you otherwise.
