People ring asking for a price on a gas oven install and expect a number like the one we publish for a cooktop. The honest answer is that a cooktop swap has a published range because the job is nearly the same every time, and an oven does not because it is not. Here is why, what actually moves the price, and how to get a firm figure from us without paying for a site visit you do not need.
Why is a gas cooktop priced but a gas oven quoted on inspection?
A like-for-like cooktop swap on an existing gas line is a predictable job: the gas point is already in the bench, the connection is standard, the old unit comes out and the new one goes in, we leak test and issue the certificate. That is why it sits at $260 to $480 including compliance. An oven or a freestanding cooker is a different animal. The connection point can be at the back, the side or the base of the appliance. The cabinetry around a wall oven may or may not have room to get a spanner on the fitting. A freestanding cooker, with an oven underneath and four or five burners on top, pulls a lot more gas than a cooktop on its own, so we have to confirm the line and regulator can feed it, and sometimes they cannot. Any one of those things can double the time on site, and we would rather tell you the real price after seeing the details than publish a number that turns into a variation on the day.
What decides the price of a gas oven install?
Five things, in roughly the order they come up on Gold Coast kitchens.
- Connection type. Some ovens take a standard rigid connection, some need a flexible hose rated for the appliance, and some imported units arrive with a fitting that needs an adapter. We check the spec sheet before we quote so there are no surprises at the bench.
- Cabinetry and access. A wall oven in a tower cabinet with the gas point sitting directly behind it is quick. One where the point is in the next cabinet over, or the tower has to come apart to reach the fitting, is not. We handle the gas side; any carpentry is your cabinetmaker's job.
- Whether the gas point needs moving. If the existing point is in the wrong spot for the new appliance, or there is no point at all where the oven is going, a new line has to be run. That is priced as a separate line item once we can see the route, and it is the single biggest swing factor.
- Gas load and line capacity. A freestanding cooker can be one of the hungriest appliances in the house. If the line was sized for a cooktop only, it may need upgrading to feed the oven properly. An undersized line means weak burners and an oven that struggles to hold temperature.
- Electrical work. Most modern gas ovens need power for ignition, the grill element, the fan, the light and the clock. If there is no power point in the cavity, an electrician has to fit one, and that is a separate trade with a separate invoice. We are not electricians and we will not pretend that part is included.
Freestanding cooker, wall oven or cooktop: what is the difference on the day?
A cooktop swap is a short, predictable job. A wall oven with an existing point behind it and power in the cavity is often much the same, which is why it sometimes lands near cooktop money once we have seen it. A freestanding upright cooker is the one that catches people out. It combines a cooktop and an oven in one unit, so the gas demand is higher, the clearances to benches, rangehood and adjacent cabinets are stricter under the gas installation standard, and the unit usually needs a restraining chain or bracket so it cannot tip or be pulled away from the wall and stress the connection. Ventilation matters too. An oven in a small enclosed kitchen can fail the ventilation check where a cooktop would pass, and we have to assess and document that as part of the compliance certificate.
What is included when we quote a gas oven?
When we give you a price for an oven or a cooker, it covers disconnecting and removing the old appliance, connecting the new one with the correct fitting, an isolation valve where one is needed, the leak test on the finished connection, commissioning every burner and the oven itself so it is cooking before we leave, and the gas compliance certificate. The certificate is not a separate charge. It is part of the gas work and you should never accept gas work without one. What is not included: the appliance itself, cabinetry changes, and electrical work for ignition or the grill.
When should you not spend the money?
A few honest cases. If your existing gas oven works and you are only changing it for a newer look, weigh that against the fact that the cooktop is usually the part people actually care about at the flame, and a gas cooktop with an electric oven is a very common and sensible pairing. If your kitchen has never had gas, a gas oven on its own is rarely the reason to bring gas into the house, and we will say so. If the appliance you have already bought needs a gas point moved, a line upgrade and a new power point, ask us for the full picture before committing, because the cheapest option might be a different model that sits where the old one did. We would rather talk you out of a job than have you pay for one that made no sense.
Who can install a gas oven in Queensland?
Only a licensed gas fitter. Gas work in Queensland is done under its own gas work licence, which is separate from a plumbing licence, and a kitchen installer, electrician, handyman or the homeowner cannot legally connect a gas oven however simple the plug-in looks. An unlicensed connection is an offence, it voids the manufacturer warranty, and it gives your insurer a reason to walk away from a claim if anything ever goes wrong. Ask whoever you book whether they hold a current gas work licence as well as a plumbing one, and expect a compliance certificate at the end of the job as a matter of course.
How do I get a firm price on my gas oven?
The cheapest first step costs you nothing. Send us the model number or a link to the appliance, a photo of the space it is going into, a photo of where the gas currently connects, and tell us whether there is a power point in the cavity.
