How do WELS ratings translate into real savings?
Through the shower, mostly. Showers are the largest indoor water use in a typical Australian home, and they use heated water, so an efficient showerhead saves twice: once on the water bill, again on the energy that heats it. The heated-water point is the one people miss, because on the Gold Coast your hot water system is one of your biggest energy users, and every litre a 3-star showerhead does not draw is a litre your tank never has to heat. Toilets are the other quiet winner: a household still flushing an original single-flush suite is sending up to 12 litres per flush against about 4.5 on a modern dual-flush full flush. Do efficient fixtures feel worse to use?

Early low-flow showerheads earned their bad reputation, but current 3-star heads use aeration and spray engineering that most people genuinely cannot pick from the old water-cannon models, and every quality tapware brand builds to WELS anyway, so choosing efficient no longer means choosing worse.
