The short version: your shower is losing a tug of war over pressure
Your shower temperature is a balance of hot and cold water arriving at the mixer at roughly matched pressures. Open another tap, flush a toilet, or start the washing machine, and one side of that balance suddenly loses flow. If the cold side drops, the shower runs hot. If the hot side drops, because someone opened a hot tap in the kitchen, the shower runs cold. In a well designed system with a healthy mixer the swing is small and corrects in a second or two. When it is violent or slow to recover, something in the chain has aged or was never right.

Old mixer cartridges are the number one culprit we replace
Inside every single-lever mixer is a ceramic disc cartridge that blends hot and cold. Over 7 to 10 years, grit and scale wear the discs and the cartridge loses its ability to hold a stable blend, so any pressure wobble in the house telegraphs straight into your shower. The telltale signs are a handle that feels gritty or stiff and a temperature that drifts even when nobody else is using water. A cartridge swap is a small licensed job and usually the cheapest fix on this page. We quote it on inspection because cartridge type and access vary by brand.
High mains pressure makes everything worse
New Queensland homes are limited to 500 kPa at the outlet by a pressure-limiting valve, but plenty of established Gold Coast streets deliver mains pressure well above that, and older homes were never fitted with a PLV. High static pressure exaggerates every imbalance, hammers your flexi hoses and tap washers, and shortens appliance life. If your pipes bang when taps close and your shower swings wildly, pressure is the first thing we test, it takes two minutes with a gauge on an outside tap. Retrofitting a PLV settles the whole house down and is quoted on inspection.
Sometimes the hot water system itself is the problem
A shower that goes cold and stays cold when a second hot outlet opens points at supply rather than balance. Small continuous flow units have a minimum flow to fire and a maximum they can serve at temperature, so two showers at once can exceed them. Ageing storage systems with sediment build-up recover slowly and effectively shrink. If your household has grown since the system went in, resizing is the real fix. Electric storage runs $1,300 to $2,400 installed, gas storage $1,800 to $3,200, gas continuous flow $1,900 to $3,500, and heat pumps $2,500 to $4,500 after rebates on the Gold Coast as of 2026.
What you can check yourself before calling
Three safe checks. First, note whether the swing happens with cold taps, hot taps or both, that tells us which side is starving. Second, check the isolation valves under sinks and behind the toilet are fully open, half-closed valves mimic blockages. Third, feel the flexi hoses under the affected fixtures for kinks. Anything beyond that, including cartridge replacement and valve work, is licensed plumbing work in Queensland, and honestly, mixer cartridges are fiddly enough that even handy owners tend to call us after the second attempt.
