Once we know which line owns it, we trace the route with a pipe locator and pinpoint with acoustic ground microphones. Thermal imaging comes out for hot water lines, where the warm plume shortlists the zone before the microphone confirms it. Nothing gets opened until there is a mark on the ground or the floor.
Where we actually find them. External and under-house runs are over-represented, because that is where salt-laden air reaches copper most easily. Hose bib supply lines, the run out to an outdoor shower, the section that ducks under a raised timber floor, the buried service line under a driveway. In-slab failures still happen and we test for them, but on the coast we work the exposed runs early because that is where the odds sit.
