Pipe Relining in Coolangatta

The coastal relining conversation almost always starts as a blocked drain. You have had the drain cleared once, maybe twice, and it has come back. That pattern is not bad luck, it is a structural defect that clearing does not touch. On the older beach-cottage stock we put the camera down and see the same picture over and over: an earthenware line with hairline cracking through the barrel, joints that have stepped a few millimetres as the sand underneath has shifted, and fine root hair coming through at three or four of those joints. Clearing shears the roots off. The crack they came through is still there.

Why coastal blocks make excavation expensive:

• The run from the house to the boundary usually passes under a driveway. On a narrow beach lot that driveway is often the only vehicle access, so it is not a case of cutting a strip and patching it, you lose the use of the property while the concrete cures.
• Established coastal gardens sit directly over the line. Frangipani, pandanus and mature natives do not transplant well and do not grow back quickly.
• Sandy soil collapses into an open trench. Deeper sections need shoring or battering back, which widens the hole well past the pipe itself.
• Side setbacks on the old beach blocks are frequently under a metre, so getting a machine to the rear of the property means going through the front or not at all.

How we run a coastal relining job: camera survey first, always. We map the run, measure the failed length, locate it above ground with the sonde and count the junctions that will need reinstating. From that footage you get a fixed written quote and a straight recommendation. If the pipe is a good candidate, the line gets jetted and root-cut back to bare wall, the liner is wet out with resin, pulled into position through an existing inspection opening and inflated against the host pipe until it cures. A robotic cutter reopens every branch junction, then we camera the finished liner and hand you the before and after footage. Most residential coastal jobs are a single day on site.

When we tell coastal clients not to reline: a liner needs a host pipe that still holds its shape. Where a section of earthenware has genuinely collapsed, where a joint has dropped so far that the line steps, or where ground movement has reversed the fall so water pools, lining locks the fault in rather than fixing it. On those we quote excavation for the bad section, and quite often the sensible job is a hybrid, dig and replace one failed metre and reline the rest of the tired run so the roots are finished with.

Salt does not attack the liner. The epoxy resin and the cured liner are unaffected by the chloride-heavy groundwater that has been chewing at mortar joints for fifty years, which is a genuine advantage of a jointless plastic pipe in a beachside street.

Coastal relining pricing follows our published Gold Coast rates:

• CCTV drain inspection only: $200 to $350, often credited against the repair if you go ahead
• CCTV camera, high-pressure jetting and written report: $500 to $900
• Pipe relining, installed: $400 to $600 or more per linear metre
• Spot repair, dig and replace one section: quoted on inspection, and often the cheaper path where the defect is shallow with machine access
• Full excavation and replacement of a line: quoted on inspection, and dearer than lining by a wide margin once reinstatement is counted

A short 3 to 4 metre patch over a cracked joint sits at the cheap end of relining work. A longer run under a beachside driveway costs considerably more, and both are quoted on inspection once we have the footage. The coastal cost drivers are junction count (old cottages that have been extended twice have branches everywhere) and site setup, because a narrow lot with no side access means longer hose and cable runs from the street.
