What decides the price of a blocked drain job?
Three things set the price: where the blockage is, what caused it, and how we can get at it. A kitchen sink blocked with fat near the trap is quick work at the bottom of the range. A sewer line choked with tree roots 20 metres from the nearest inspection opening takes bigger gear and more time. Access matters too. If your overflow relief gully is buried under a garden bed or the inspection openings were concreted over during a renovation, we spend time finding an entry point before we can even start. When we quote, we quote a fixed price for the clear itself, so you know the number before the machine comes off the ute.
Is a machine clear or jetting better for my drain?
A machine clear suits most household blockages, while jetting is the right tool for grease, silt and heavy root infestations. The electric eel cuts through roots and pushes through soft blockages, and at $250 to $400 it is the sensible first step for a single blocked fixture or a slow sewer. High-pressure jetting scours the full internal wall of the pipe rather than just punching a hole through the middle. When a drain has blocked more than once, we recommend the combined CCTV, jetting and report package at $500 to $900, because it clears the line properly and shows you exactly what state the pipe is in.
Do I really need a CCTV camera inspection?
You need one if the same drain has blocked twice, and you can skip it for a one-off blockage with an obvious cause. A camera inspection runs $200 to $350 on its own. What it buys you is certainty. On the Gold Coast, a lot of homes built before the 1990s still have earthenware clay sewers, and once roots find a joint they come back every season. The camera tells you whether you are dealing with a simple maintenance issue, a cracked section that needs a repair, or a collapsed line. Without it, you are paying to clear the same drain every year and hoping for the best.
Why do Gold Coast drains keep blocking?
Tree roots are the number one cause we see, followed by grease and wet wipes. Older suburbs with mature figs, umbrella trees and palms are the worst for root intrusion, because the roots chase the moisture leaking from ageing clay pipe joints. Sandy soil in canal-front suburbs also lets pipes settle and create low spots where waste sits and builds up. In our experience, a drain that blocks every 6 to 12 months almost always has a physical defect, not bad luck. Clearing it treats the symptom. The camera finds the cause.
How much does a blocked drain cost after hours?
After-hours work costs $360 to $560 for the first hour, plus the cost of the clearing work itself. A sewer backing up into the house or an overflow relief gully surging in the yard cannot wait until morning, and we attend those calls across the Gold Coast. If the blockage is contained to one fixture and everything else drains fine, it can usually wait for a standard daytime booking at standard rates, and we will tell you that honestly on the phone rather than charge you an emergency rate for a non-emergency.
Can I clear a blocked drain myself?
You can try a plunger and hot water on a single blocked fixture, but leave chemicals and hired machines alone. Supermarket caustic drain cleaners rarely shift a real blockage and they make the job nastier for whoever opens the pipe next. Hired eels in untrained hands regularly get stuck in the drain or punch through damaged pipe, and under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 most drainage work in Queensland must be done by a licensed plumber anyway. If the blockage involves your sewer line rather than one sink, call a licensed drainer before it becomes an overflow.
