What counts as a real plumbing emergency?
Anything that is actively flooding, anything sewage-related, and any gas smell counts as a real emergency. Water you cannot stop at an isolation valve, a sewer surcharging through the overflow relief gully or into the shower, a hot water system dumping water through a ceiling, and any suspicion of a gas leak all justify an immediate call. For gas leaks, get everyone outside, turn off the meter or cylinder if it is safe to do so, and call from outside the house. As a licensed gas fitter as well as a plumber, we treat gas calls as the top priority on the board.
What plumbing problems can wait until morning?
Most single-fixture problems can wait once the water is isolated. A dripping tap, a running toilet, a slow drain on one sink, or a hot water system that has simply stopped heating are all next-day jobs. The trick is knowing your isolation points. Every toilet and most taps have a small isolation valve at the wall, and every home has a main water meter valve at the front boundary. Turn the fixture or the main off, and a midnight panic becomes a standard daytime booking at standard rates. We would rather talk you through shutting a valve for free than charge an after-hours rate for a job that did not need it.
How can I keep an emergency plumbing bill down?
Shut the water off before you call, and have clear access ready when we arrive. Every minute water keeps running adds damage, and water damage usually ends up costing more than the plumbing. Find your main meter now, before you need it, and check it turns by hand. When you call, describe what you can see: where the water is coming from, whether drains are involved, whether you can smell gas. That lets us bring the right gear the first time. Clearing the cupboard under a sink or the area around the hot water system before we arrive saves paid time on site.
Does insurance cover emergency plumbing on the Gold Coast?
Insurance usually covers the resulting water damage, but not the plumbing repair itself. Most home policies pay for damaged flooring, cabinetry and plaster from a sudden burst, such as a failed flexi hose, but the hose replacement and the plumber's time to fix the leak are generally the owner's cost. Insurers also expect you to act quickly to limit damage, which is another reason to isolate the water immediately. Keep our invoice and photos of the failure, because assessors ask for both. Gradual leaks that were left unattended are commonly excluded, which makes fixing small leaks early the cheapest insurance there is.

All three are cheaper to prevent than to fix at midnight: flexi hoses should be checked and replaced around the 5 to 10 year mark by a licensed plumber, recurring drains deserve a camera, and a leaking hot water tank is a warning worth acting on.
