What is included in a hot water replacement price?
A proper installed price covers the new unit, removal and disposal of the old one, connection, valves and compliance. That means new tempering or pressure-limiting valves where required, drain lines run to a legal discharge point, and the whole installation done to AS/NZS 3500. For gas systems it also means the gas connection and certification by a licensed gas fitter under AS/NZS 5601. Watch out for quotes that only cover "supply and swap". The extras that get added later, valves, drainage, electrical isolation, are exactly the parts that make the job compliant. How long should a hot water system last?
Expect 8 to 12 years from a storage tank, and often longer from continuous flow units. On the Gold Coast, storage tanks near the coast can die younger because salt air attacks the casing and fittings. The tank itself is protected internally by a sacrificial anode, and having the anode checked around the 5 year mark is the single cheapest way to extend tank life. Once a tank is leaking from the cylinder itself rather than a valve, it is finished.
